Gerald Holtom a dessiné l’emblème pour le désarmement nucléaire

Gerald Holtom était membre de la campagne de désarmement nucléaire. Le 21 février 1958 et à la demande du chef du mouvement, Holtom, qui était un artiste britannique, a créé l’emblème et s’est inspiré du langage maritime sémaphore.

Les deux lettres qui ont été utilisées pour créer ce symbole sont le N et le D en référence au Désarmement nucléaire. Les deux traits qui sont vers la gauche et la droite signifient en signe sémaphore le N et le trait qui est au centre est celui du D.

Cet emblème a également été adopté par les hippies et il est plus connu de nos jours pour son expression « Peace and love ». Le symbole est toujours identifié comme opposant au désarmement nucléaire en Grande Bretagne, mais partout dans le monde, c’est le signe de la paix, de la non violence et du pacifisme.
