L’île Peanut abrite le Kennedy bunker

L’île Peanut abrite le bunker de Kennedy. Le Kennedy bunker avait été construit, il y a plus d’une cinquantaine d’années et il avait pour utilité de cacher le Président Kennedy en cas d’attaque nucléaire.

Vu l’hystérie qui régnait à l’époque concernant la guerre froide et surtout après la crise des missiles de Cuba, le gouvernement américain avait jugé utile de construire un endroit secret et à l’abri des regards où le Président Kennedy et sa famille pouvaient être en sécurité en cas d’attaque atomique.

Cet abri avait été construit en décembre 1961 bien caché dans les bois de l’île Peanut qui n’est accessible que par bateau. L’île se situe dans le comté de Palm Beach en Floride. Kennedy ne l’avait jamais utilisé et il était tombé en ruine jusqu’à sa restauration dans les années 2000 par le Palm Beach Maritime Museum.

Il comportait à l’époque quelques étagères, une chaise à bascule du président, une radio, des rations de nourritures ainsi que des masques à gaz, juste des choses utiles pour survivre en cas d’attaque. L’île Peanut se nomme ainsi car elle devait abriter une usine d’huile d’arachides, usine qui n’a jamais vu le jour.
